Senior Chinese leaders joined members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Tuesday in their panel discussions.

During his discussions with ethnic minority members, Vice- President Hu Jintao said that united efforts should be made to vigorously step up economic and social development in ethnic minority communities.

He said it is the established policy of the central government to work for the all-round prosperity of all ethnic groups across China and particularly support the development of ethnic minority areas.

"This support will be reinforced continuously with the further growth of the national economy and the country's financial resources,'' Hu said.

Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo told members of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomingtang and the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League attending the ongoing CPPCC session Tuesday that adherence to the one-China principle is the basis for the resumption of cross-Straits talks.

He expressed the willingness to exchange views with political parties and personages in Taiwan who back the development of cross-Straits relations and oppose Taiwan independence.

Wu called again for the active promotion of the three direct links across the Straits.

In a panel discussion with CPPCC members involved in the economy, Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao called for more attention to the establishment and improvement of a decision-making mechanism involving leaders, experts and the public.

He added that the rules and procedures governing major decision-making should also be improved.

Major decision-making concerning the national economy and social development must seek advice from experts of various departments and sectors, he said and urged the members to make further contributions to the country's progress.

While visiting the CPPCC members from trade unions, the Communist Youth League of China and women's organizations, Zeng Qinghong, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee, asked the members to better carry out their responsibility of supervision and explore more effective ways of doing this.

Huang Ju, also a member of the Standing Committee of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, had a talk with the science specialists and urged scientists and researchers to continue the efforts to promote the advancement and innovation of science and technology, accelerating the practical application of their scientific studies.
