Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo said Tuesday the central government will unswervingly stick to the one-China policy and work for the resumption of the cross-Straits dialogue and negotiation on this basis.

"We should place stronger emphasis on the fight against the separatist activities for 'Taiwan independence' and never allow the separatists' plot to succeed," Wu told members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) from the Revolutionary Committee of Chinese Kuomintang and the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League.

These members are here to attend the First Session of the 10th CPPCC National Committee, which opened Monday.

Wu said Taiwan's future lies in the reunification of the motherland and resolving the Taiwan issue is pinned on the Taiwan people. "We will work hard to promote the realization of the 'three direct links' and welcome Taiwanese political parties and personages who are for developing cross-Straits relations and against 'Taiwan independence' to conduct exchange and dialogue with us."

"We will strive for the peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and effort. At the same time, we will never allow anybody to separate Taiwan from China in any way," said Wu, who is also a member of the Political Bureau Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

The Taiwan issue could not remain unsettled without a time limit, he stressed.

Wu also reviewed briefly the achievements made in developing the cross-Straits relations and fighting the separatist forces in Taiwan under the policy of "peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems" and President Jiang Zemin's eight-point proposal, along with the efforts of Taiwanese compatriots.
