Beijing is about to speed up venue construction for the 2008 Olympic Games as the count-down was announced by Meng Xuenong, Beijing's newly-elected mayor, Sunday in Beijing.

It was not too early to start the count-down, Meng said at the first meeting of the new Beijing municipal government, which was formed in January, 2003.

"As to complete the construction for masses of venues and stadiums with a world-recognized standard in three or four years, we should make ample preparations for the coming challenges and difficulties. That's why I suggested the count-down." he said.

Meng said Beijing will try its utmost to get the Olympic venues ready by the end of 2006 so that tests can be held from the beginning of 2007.

As planned, Beijing will build or renovate 37 stadiums and gymnasiums for the 2008 Games, including 32 in Beijing and five in other cities. In addition, other related facilities, including the Olympic Village, Main Press Center and International Broadcasting Center and 59 training stadiums, are under construction.
