The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday called again for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to step down for the sake of peace and stability in the Gulf region.

UAE Foreign Minister Rashid Abdullah al Nuaimi issued the appeal at a foreign ministers' conference of six gulf countries held here, calling for Saddam to resign.

The purpose of UAE's initiative is to maintain peace in the region, and the Iraqi government and people will decide whether Saddam resigns or not, Rashid told reporters.

However, the ministers did not discuss UAE's initiative at the conference, he said.

The UAE made the same demand at an Arab League summit Saturday in Egypt, becoming the first Arab country to openly call on the Iraqi leader to quit power and leave Iraq.
