German President Kicks off Five-day Visit to India

German President Johannes Rau arrived in New Delhi Sunday on a five-day visit to India to carry forward the new impetus in bilateral relations and hold consultations with Indian leaders on the Iraq crisis.

German President Johannes Rau arrived in New Delhi Sunday on a five-day visit to India to carry forward the new impetus in bilateral relations and hold consultations with Indian leaders on the Iraq crisis.

Rau, who is leading a high-power delegation, will tomorrow holdwide-ranging discussions with Indian Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee on the entire gamut of bilateral relations besides exchanging perceptions on important regional and international developments, according to the Press Trust of India.

He will call on Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and have meetings with Indian External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, besides attending some business functions during his stay in Delhi.

This is the first Presidential visit from Germany in over a decade, the last being that of President Richard Von Weizsacker in1991. The last presidential visit from the Indian side was of Indian President K.R. Narayanan in September, 1998.
