People's Daily Hails Opening of New CPPCC Session

Chinese leading newspaper, the People's Daily, in its Monday editorial hails the opening of the first session of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference due to open on March 3, describing it as an "important event" when the people of the whole country are striving to build a well-off society, a goal set by the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Entitled "Work with One Mind and One Heart to Create a Beautiful Tomorrow", the editorial describes the Ninth CPPCC National Committee that has ended its five-year term as having made "major contributions to the reform, opening up, modernization drive and the great cause of peaceful reunification of the motherland."

Firmly adhering to the system of multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the CPC leadership and upholding the banners of patriotism and socialism, the Ninth CPPCC National Committee has focused on the two major themes of "unity and democracy" and faithfully performed its functions, bringing its work into depth and orderly development, the editorial says.

The paper reiterates the importance of the United Front work, saying that building socialism with Chinese characteristics is the common cause of millions of people and the more people united, the better and the greater the rallying power, the better.

"We must always keep a firm hold of the magic weapon of the United Front, display the advantages of the system of multi-party cooperation and political consultation and unite and mobilize all the positive factors to create a beautiful tomorrow for socialist China," the editorial says.

The editorial stresses that the new situation and new tasks in the new century have raised higher demand on the CPPCC and provided a greater arena for the CPPCC to display its due roles. It urges the CPPCC, which has the broadest representation and the maximum political tolerance, to display its advantages in brains and extensive ties and smooth channels with the people, advance with the times and make new and innovative efforts in performing its duties.

The paper calls on the new CPPCC National Committee to make new and greater contributions to the nationwide efforts to fulfill the tasks set by the 16th CPC National Congress and advance the great socialist cause.
