Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and visiting Cuban President Fidel Castro on Sunday held talks over bilateral relations and issues concerning Iraq and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kyodo News reported.

Castro told Koizumi during a meeting that he welcomes Baghdad's destruction of its al-Samoud missiles and speculated the Iraq crisis could be resolved without war, Kyodo said.

The nuclear program by the DPRK can be solved through politicalefforts by the international community, he was quoted.

Koizumi told Castro that Japan has placed priority on international cooperation as well as a close Japan-U.S. alliance in dealing with issues of Iraq and the DPRK, the report said.

Castro arrived in Tokyo on Saturday for an unofficial three-day visit.

It is the second time the 76-year-old Cuban leader is here in Japan. He first visited Japan in December 1995.
