Lethal Injection to be Practiced Throughout China's Yunnan

The Yunnan Provincial Higher People's Court announced here Saturday that, effective as of Saturday, lethal injection will be used in carrying out the death penalty throughout the province.

The Yunnan Provincial Higher People's Court announced here Saturday that, effective as of Saturday, lethal injection will be used in carrying out the death penalty throughout the province.

Yunnan, in south-west China, becomes the first province to officially carry out lethal injection death penalty, said Zhao Shijie, president of the court, adding that the move represents a milestone for the country's judicial administration.

According to Zhao, there are currently 99 countries in the world employing capital punishment, mainly through firing squads, hanging, beheading, electrocution, gas poisoning, stoning and lethal injection.

China's Law of Criminal Procedures, in force since 1997, stipulates that death penalties should be carried out by shooting or through lethal injection. At present, only the United States, Singapore and China use lethal injection.

The United Nations has a long tradition of urging the alleviation of suffering for those put to death, Zhao said.

The Kunming Intermediate People's Court in Yunnan's capital city began researching the subject of lethal injections in May of 1996. Following thousands of laboratory trials, scientists invented a non-virulent drug which brings about immediate clinical death while inflicting no physiological pain.

Prior to Saturday's announcement, Kunming carried out 112 executions by lethal injection.
