Castro Visits Pudong New District
Fidel Castro, visiting president of Cuba's State Council and Council of Ministers, visited the Pudong New District in Shanghai on Saturday, accompanied by Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

During the visit, Castro spoke highly of China's great achievements in reform and opening-up, expressing his wish to enhance bilateral economic and trade cooperation.
Together with Jiang, Castro went to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum in the morning, and later to the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. He concluded his four-day state visit to China and left Shanghai in the afternoon.
The Pudong New District, located in the east bank of Huangpu River and occupying 556 square kilometers, has become a financial and shipping center in Shanghai as well as a base for high-technology and modern industry after 13-year development.
By 2002, over 80 countries and regions had 8,000-plus investment projects in Pudong, with total investment of more than 43.5 billion US dollars. Pudong's economy accounted for 23 percent of Shanghai's total economy in 2002.
