An express freight train carrying 6,000 tents arrived in Bachu County on Friday, providing relief in the wake of Monday morning's devastating earthquake.
The 12-car train, the first to be used especially for transporting disaster-relief materials, was loaded in and departed from Wuhan, the capital city of central China's Hubei province, at noon on Tuesday.
It took about 50 hours to cover the 5,000-kilometers, a record speed among domestic cargo trains.
According to Li Huaxin, deputy secretary of the Bachu County Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the quake has left 18,000 households homeless. Some are still sheltered in make-shift shacks.
The delivery of the 6,000 tents brought the total number of tents to almost 10,000, enough for half of the homeless residents, Li said.
Meanwhile, the central government decided Thursday to transfer another 7,000 tents from Zhengzhou City of central China's Henan Province, further helping the quake-stricken residents.
In addition, eight truck-loads of disaster-relief materials have been delivered to Bachu.
