Thousands of homeless earthquake victims in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region found shelter in donated tents on Friday following the region's most devastating earthquake since 1949.

Fifty-two year old Awudwut said that he has felt somewhat relieved as his eight-member family will be better protected from the cold winds. The family will now be able to discard their make-shift shelter pieced together from plastic, mat and timber drawn from the debris.
About 6,000 tents assembled by the Ministry of Civil Affairs arrived in Bachu County in central China's Hubei Province via two special trains on Friday, the local disaster-relief headquarters said.
The tents were rushed immediately from Bachu County Railway Station to the needy victims in the county's five towns via more than 100 military and other vehicles.
"These tents have come here from 5,000 kilometers away. it is our duty to distribute them immediately," said Zhu Zhunping, chiefof Qongkurqak Township in Bachu County.
The latest statistics show that The earthquake on Monday, whichmeasured 6.8 on the Richter Scale, destroyed 18,861 houses and left about 100,000 residents without shelter in Bachu County alone.
The death toll stood at 268 at present, with more than 4,000 people injured.
