Disaster relief in earthquake-stricken Jiashi and Bachu counties in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has shifted from saving lives to providing adequate shelters for survivors and rebuilding homes.

Ji'erla Yisam, an official of Kashi Prefecture, said disaster relief in the 48 hours after Monday's earthquake focused on digging out survivors. It had now shifted to making proper housingarrangements for affected people, repairing damaged village facilities and spring sowing preparations.

The earthquake made 100,000 people in Bachu County homeless. Atleast 8,000 tents are needed to house the survivors. More donated tents are on the way to the quake-stricken areas.

Some 140 power company technicians are busy repairing transmission lines at nine villages in Qongkurqak Township, as allthe transformers and low-voltage lines were brought down.

"Electricity is expected to be restored to each village, even to the tents in a week," said Liu Bao, assistant to the general manager of the Jiangnan Power Company.

The quake-hit areas will also prepare for the upcoming spring sowing, due to begin in 10 days.
