Hundreds of thousand of Egyptians held an anti-US war rally at a sports stadium here Thursday to show support for Iraq.
The stadium with a total capacity of 100,000 was fully packed while some 40,000 others had to gather outside, police said.
The demonstrators held placards denouncing an expected US-led war on Iraq in Arabic, French and English while large numbers of police were on hand for the rally.
"With our blood, with our souls, we will sacrifice ourselves for you, Iraq," the demonstrators vowed.
The rally was organized by a committee of opposition parties and trade unions with an aim "to support Iraq and protest against US aggression against Iraq and Zionist massacres in Palestine."
Local press reported Thursday that the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) will stage a march of solidarity with Iraq and Palestine in Cairo after the Arab summit slated for March 1 in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm EL Sheikh, which will group 500,000 people.
The NDP expressed its appreciation and full support to the continued efforts being exerted by President Hosni Mubarak to reach a peaceful settlement of the Iraqi crisis and avert a war in order to save the people of Iraq and the entire Arab area from the horrors and consequences of war.
In Egypt, demonstrations are normally banned in force under emergency laws since 1981. But anti-war rallies or protests have been taking place in recent days on university campuses and in mosque compounds.
