CCTV Sports Awards to Honor China's Top Athletes, Coaches

The awarding ceremony is set for Friday night.
The annual CCTV Sports Awards, recognized as the Chinese version of the Laureus World Sports Awards, is taken as the premier honors on the Chinese sporting calendar. The awards are to honor China's top sportsmen and sportswomen for their achievements during the past year.
As first Asian to play the NBA All-Star game, Yao Ming has become the most adored basketball star in China. No one will feel surprised if he eventually beats the four other candidates including last year's winner and world diving champion Tian Liang, for the title of "Sportsman of the Year".
Yang Yang (A), who won China's first ever Winter Olympic gold medal, in the women's 500 meters short track speeskating event, at the Salt Lake City Games last year, is hot favored for the honor of "Sportswoman of the Year".
The Awards are made in a range of nine categories -- Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Breakthrough of the Year, Athlete of the Year for Non-Olympic Sports, Cooperation of the Year and Disable Athlete of the Year.
In each category there are five nominees selected by a group of300 Chinese sports journalists. The final winners of the awards are to be voted by 80 sports specialists on Friday.
