Aftershocks Still Strong, but Decreasing in Xinjiang

The aftershocks in earthquake-hit Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were dying down Thursday, sourceswith the regional seismological bureau said.

The aftershocks in earthquake-hit Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were dying down Thursday, sourceswith the regional seismological bureau said.

By 10 a.m.Thursday, 1,854 aftershocks had jolted Jiashi and Bachu counties, around the epicenter of Monday morning's earthquake, with the strongest measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale.

The aftershocks had become less frequent since Tuesday, decreasing from over 40 to less than 20 per hour on average, said Ma Baozhu, director of the seismic data telemetry and processing center in Urumqi.

However, the areas still suffered from three to four tremors per hour measuring four on the Richter scale, said Gao Guoying, director of the forecasting center of the regional seismological bureau.

The 6.8 magnitude quake that rocked Jiashi and Bachu killed 266people and destroyed over 9,000 housing units in the area.
