The new leadership of China will continue its long-standing friendship with Cuba and make efforts to further bilateral ties in the new era, Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said Thursday.

Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting with Fidel Castro, president of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers of Cuba, in the Great Hall of the People.

Praising the friendly ties between China and Cuba, Hu said the two states and peoples enjoy a tradition of profound friendship and this relationship has advanced due to the sincere concern of the two nations' leaders.

As socialist countries led by the communist parties, Hu said, China and Cuba share the same ideals and faith, and regardless of the changes in the international arena, the two countries will by no means be deterred from their faith in the socialist path.

Hu wished the Cuban people success in their socialist construction.

Castro extended his congratulations for the successful convening of the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

He congratulated Hu on his election as general secretary of the CPC's Central Committee at the congress.

He said that he has always closely followed China's development and hoped to learn from China in economic development during his visit.

Noting that China, a large nation with a long history and a glorious civilization, wields strong influence in international affairs, he expressed his hope that the two peoples will support each other, as they have always done, and continue to strengthen bilateral ties.

Castro also expressed his gratitude for the support and assistance offered by the Chinese government and people.

Castro arrived in the Chinese capital Wednesday afternoon on a state visit to China as guest of Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

Castro last visited China in 1995.
