Classes resumed Wednesday in a primary school in Bachu County of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the site of Monday's devastating magnitude 6.8 earthquake.

Near the ruins of the former Kezihikemu elementary school, soldiers have pitched six tents with desks placed neatly inside. More than 100 students have returned to school.

Osman Mijiti, deputy director of the Bachu education department, said none of the students was injured in the earthquake since theywere all out on the playground attending the flag-raising ceremonyat the time, a common practice in Chinese primary and middle schools.

Although not all schools resumed classes on Wednesday due to the obvious limitations, most will strive to resume classes as soon as possible, the official said.

There is an urgent need for textbooks, teaching materials, desks and chairs, he added.
