China's top legislature held the final meeting of its ninth five-year term of office Thursday in Beijing to pave the way for the upcoming election of the new Chinese leadership.

China's top legislature held the final meeting of its ninth five-year term of office Thursday in Beijing to pave the way for the upcoming election of the new Chinese leadership.

The 32nd meeting of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee will examine the qualification of all deputies to the first session of the Tenth NPC, scheduled on March 5, on which new Chinese leaders including state president and premier will be elected.

Li Peng, chairman of this lawmaking body of China, presided over today's meeting.
