China's software industry saw rapid growth in 2002, but still needs development, Qu Weizhi, deputy director of the State Council information technology office, told a national conference on the software industry in Beijing Tuesday.

Problems still existed in the industry with most the enterprises small in scale and lacking skilled workers, which resulted in low efficiency and low market share, said Qu.

Last year domestic enterprises held just one third of the country's software market, and less than two percent of global software sales were made by China.

Meanwhile, the country's major software fields, including banking, securities, civil aviation and metallurgy, were still monopolized by foreign software companies.

Therefore the Chinese government would continue to support the development of the software sector, said Qu.

Gross sales of the industry exceeded 110 billion yuan (13.25 billion US dollars) last year, up 40 percent from 2001. It was aiming for 250 billion yuan (30.1 billion US dollars) by 2005, a source with the office said.
