Donations to the earthquake victims in Jiashi-Bachu area in western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, should be made in the form of financial aid, said Hu Jiayan, a senior official of the autonomous region.
Given the fact that large quantities of tents, cotton-padded coats and quilts and food supplies have already reached the area, she noted that the basic needs of the homeless have been met.
In view of extensive damages in the area, the reconstruction of housing and industrial start-up will require a substantial amount of capital.
A distance of more than 1,000 kilometers between the quake epicenter and Urumqi, the autonomous regional capital, makes the delivery of material aid very hard. Hence, financial aid is the best option at this point, she added.
Although some donors, including some departments and units, organizations and individuals, have intended to trek to the disaster area, Hu said this is not the appropriate time due to the risks of frequent aftershocks that has so far numbered 658 and the difficulties and hardships involved with transportation.
The quake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, jolted western Xinjiang at 10:03 Monday morning. To date, it has claimed 261 lives and left 2,000 locals seriously injured, relief officials said Wednesday morning.
