More than 100,000 antiwar protesters took to the streets of the Sudanese capital Wednesday to protest a possible US-led war on
Iraq
.
The demonstration, organized by the Popular Organization for Solidarity With Iraq (POSI), was believed to be the biggest in a decade. It was attended by people from all walks of life, includinggovernment and opposition parties, workers, students, women's and youth organizations.
Protesters carrying placards and chanting anti-US slogans marched to the Martyrs Square in front of the Republican Palace, and burnt a US flag in front of the United Nations offices.
In a memorandum addressed to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the POSI said the Sudanese people denounced "the genocidal war by American and British forces now being gathered in the region for aggression on the brotherly people of Iraq."
It dismissed the argument that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction "unconvincing" while no reference was being made to such weapons possessed by
Israel
.
The memorandum urged the UN General Secretariat and Security Council to "rid the United Nations of American hegemony and live upto its responsibility stipulated by the UN Charter towards such barbaric threats that violate the international charter and jeopardize world peace and security."
No arrests were made during the mostly peaceful demonstration although a large number of uniformed police were deployed to maintain order along the route and outside the UN offices.
