Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday called for peaceful settlement of the nuclear crisis in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in a message of congratulations to South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun on his coming into office.

"We will put maximum efforts into finding a peaceful settlement of the conflict by constructively influencing Pyongyang and Washington. I think you share our opinion that the continuation of the dialogue between South Korea and North Korea (DPRK) and the development of inter-Korean economic cooperation are the most important factors of stability on the Korean peninsula," the Kremlin press service quoted the message as saying.

Putin in his message also urged to promote bilateral relations between Russia and South Korea.

"I would like to note with satisfaction that ties between Russia and the Republic of Korea have grown noticeably stronger during the past few years," Putin said, adding that "there are also good prospects for military-technical cooperation."

"The connection of the Trans-Korean and Trans-Siberian railways to form a transport corridor from Asia to Europe and also the projects of Russian gas deliveries to Korea will have profound significance. We hope direct investment from the Republic of Koreain the Russian economy will grow. All this will meet the objective of strengthening relations of constructive complementary partnership between our two countries," Putin said.

Roh Moo-Hyun, a former human rights lawyer, was sworn in as South Korean president Tuesday. He won last December's presidential election representing the Millennium Democratic Party.
