Construction on the northwest China Gansu Province section of the national west-to-east gas project is scheduled to start on Mar. 1, according to the provincial Department of Land and Resources.

The laying of the gas pipeline in Gansu is expected to be completed within five months, said Yang Xiuhai, an official with the department.

The provincial Department of Land and Resources had appropriated 70 million yuan (8.4 million US dollars) for the resettlement of residents living along the planned route of the pipeline, Yang said.

Residents had cooperated well for the project, he said, adding that upon completion, cities along the gas pipeline would have access to cleaner enery.

China launched the west-to-east gas transmission project in 2001, in a bid to tap the vast gas resources in the country's western regions and to meet the increasing demand for energy, he explained.

The gas transmission project, starting from Luntai County in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the northwest, will cover 10 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities including Xinjiang, Gansu and Ningxia with a total length of 3,900 kilometers, he said.

It will cross the Gobi Desert, snow-covered mountains and grassland, the Loess Plateau, the Taihang Mountains, as well as the Yellow, Huaihe and Yangtze rivers before reaching Shanghai, the country's largest city in the east.

The project required a total investment of 40 billion yuan (4.8billion US dollars). On completion, it would transmit 12 billion cubic meters of gas annually, he said.
