US Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Tuesday that the United States would provide up to 100,000 tons of food in aid to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) this year.

Powell, who was attending the inauguration ceremony of new South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, said Washington will initially give the DPRK 40,000 tons of food and will offer 60,000 tons more in response to an emergency call by the World Food Program (WFP), the UN agency that manages food aid to the DPRK.

During a stopover in Tokyo on his way to Seoul, Powell said his country did not want to use food aid as a "political weapon," despite what he called the DPRK's defiance on the nuclear issue.

The United States, which shipped 157,000 tons of food to the DPRK last year, has been the largest donor to the WFP's DPRK program since 1995. Shipments of US food were suspended in December amid increasing concerns over the DPRK's nuclear program.

Asked why Washington was offering less aid this year, a US official said because the WFP had asked for less aid and because other nations were expected to boost their donations.
