China Red Cross Sets up Hotline, Fund for Disaster-hit Xinjiang
The China Red Cross Society (CRCS) set up a hotline and a bank account Tuesday to receive donations for northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which was hit by a major earthquake Monday morning.

CRCS donated 250,000 yuan (30,000 US dollars) to its Red Cross branch in Xinjiang immediately after the quake struck. A CRCS rescue team was also on the way to the region.
Measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, the quake jolted the area approximately 40 kilometers east of the outlying Jiashi county in Xinjiang at 10:03 Monday morning (Beijing time).
The devastating earthquake has so far claimed 261 lives, injured 2,050 people, and toppled 8,861 houses.
The night temperature in the region dropped below zero, and theresidents were in urgent need of food and clothes.
