Wang Lequan, top leader of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is leading relief work in the region devastated by an earthquake Monday morning.
Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and secretary of the CPC Xinjiang Committee, visited the most severely affected counties of Bachu and Jiashi shortly after flying from Beijing to nearby Kashi City.
Relief materials arrived in the area and were delivered to residents before dawn Tuesday. Meanwhile, the wounded were being treated and victims were being buried according to local custom, said local officials.
The temperature dropped below zero centigrade in the area Monday night, but residents were all provided clothes, tents and other temporary shelters before dark.
Rescue activities were also being aided by Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, which has two farms in Jiashi and Bachu counties.
The two counties, which were hit the hardest in the earthquake, were important towns along the ancient Silk Road in China's history.
The earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, jolted western Xinjiang at 10:03 Monday morning. It has so far killed 261people and seriously injured over 2,000 others, relief officials said Tuesday morning.
