Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze said Monday that Georgia would continue its special operation in the country's Pankisi Gorge, bordering Russia's breakaway republic of Chechnya.

"The main task is to maintain stability in the Pankisi Gorge and prevent armed groups from entering there from Chechnya or other regions," Shevardnadze was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying.

Speaking in his weekly radio address to the nation, Shevardnadze said that all attempts to cross the border illegally "will be immediately curbed."

Georgia conducted a military operation in August in a bid to clean up the lawless Pankisi Gorge under the increasing pressure from Russia, which has accused Georgia of sheltering Chechen rebels in the gorge and threatened to carry out its own attacks against the rebels on the Georgian territory.
