Hong Kong to Launch World's First SMS to Verify Credit Card

The world's first SMS (short messaging service)-based m-commerce service will be adopted to verify credit card transactions in Hong Kong.

The world's first SMS (short messaging service)-based m-commerce service will be adopted to verify credit card transactions in Hong Kong.

BOC Credit Card (International) Ltd, CSL telecom and Visa International announced the partnership Monday to launch the service on March 1, 2003 in Hong Kong.

BOC Visa credit cardholders and CSL customers that register theservice will be able to pay for goods and services via SMS anytimeand anywhere with their mobile phones over the CSL network, with the same level of security as they do in the physical world.

Based on an open m-commerce standard, the three collaborating parties will partner with a variety of merchants to offer such applications as phone bill payment, movie ticket purchase and golfbooking during the four-month pilot.

More and different types of applications will be explored and developed afterwards.

To enjoy the service, customers are required to register on a designated website hosted by BOC Credit Card and CSL. Successfullyregistered customers will be notified by e-mail and a password, which they can personalize later.

During the process of a mobile transaction via SMS, the "Verified by Visa" service will allow the card issuer to verify theidentities of the mobile users through their password in real timebefore authorizing charges for mobile purchases.
