The first shipments of relief goods,1,200 tents and 1,000 cotton quilts would reach Jiashi and Bachu counties in western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Tuesday, say sources with the regional civil affairs department.

The materials, now on the way, are expected to arrive in the quake affected area on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 6,000 tents, sent from central China's Hubei province, have already arrived in Urumqi, the capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The leading rescue group led by Yang Yanyin, Chinese vice-minister of civil affairs, who arrived in Urumqi Monday night, would leave for the quake-hit area on Tuesday.

Local quake victims are in great need of clothing and temporary shelters to protect themselves from freezing night temperatures, according to sources with the local government.

The quake that jolted at 10:03 hours Monday morning (Beijing time) in northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has left 257 people dead and more than 1,000 others injured, said local government officials.
