Powell: US Wants Closer Relations with China

US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Monday that US President George W. Bush and the US government are willing to establish closer relations with China.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Monday that US President George W. Bush and the US government are willing to establish closer relations with China.

In a meeting with Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao, Powell said the United States is willing to strengthen cooperation with China.

Powell conveyed greetings to Hu from President Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney, and said that US-China relations have scored important progress in many areas.

The United States understands that the Taiwan issue is a highly sensitive core issue to China and will adhere to the one-China policy, he said.

Powell said the United States will abide by the three joint communiques reached between the United States and China and other relevant commitments the US side has made.

Powell also briefed Hu on the US policy on the Iraq issue and the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and the United States' considered moves on the issues.
