General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Hu Jintao met Monday with US Secretary of State Colin Powell at the Great Hall of the People.

In the photo session Hu, also Chinese Vice-president, said he was pleased to meet Powell again after their good discussions last April in the United States, which impressed him very much.

Hu said he heard Powell had a good discussion with Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan earlier in the morning.

Powell said it was a pleasure to see Hu again and congratulated him on his election as the general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

He also expressed his congratulations on the upcoming convening of China's National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

He and Tang had very good talks Monday morning, Powell said. Now, he met Tang almost once every week.

Powell conveyed the greetings of US President George W. Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney. Cheney will visit China this April.

Hu said he was looking forward to Cheney's visit.

Powell also said he would take Hu to the New York City to eat hot dogs together if Hu visits the United States again.

Political solution to Iraq issue within UN framewor

He said the Iraq issue and the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) are two hot spots concerning the international community at present.

Hu said China has always requested Iraq fully, strictly and earnestly implement the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council, and honor its words of possessing no weapons of mass destruction.

On the DPRK nuclear issue, Hu said China maintains that the Korean Peninsula should be free from nuclear weapons, and peace and stability there should be safeguarded.

Historical experience has shown that the DPRK nuclear issue can only be properly settled through dialogue and consultation, Hu said.

China hopes the United States and the DPRK will conduct direct dialogues as soon as possible, said Hu.

He said that China will work with the international community to continue making efforts for political solutions to the two issues.

Sino-US relations
China is ready to work with the United States to maintain and advance the positive momentum in the development of Sino-US relations, said Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao.

In line with the consensus reached between Chinese President Jiang Zemin and US President George W. Bush at Crawford in the United States, Hu said, the two countries have recently kept up frequent high-level dialogues, strengthened cooperation in counter-terrorism, economy and trade, and had close contacts and consultations on major international issues such as Iraq and the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Hu said that on the whole bilateral relations enjoy sound development.

He said that the key to the steady development of bilateral relations is that the two sides treat their relations from a long-term strategic perspective, try to expand consensus, enhance cooperation of mutual benefit and handle differences with caution.

Noting that the Taiwan question concerns China's sovereignty, territorial integrity and fundamental interests, Hu said he hoped the United States would abide by a one-China policy and principles enshrined in the three Sino-US joint communiques, and stick to its opposition to "Taiwan's independence" so as to play a constructive role in the realization of China's peaceful reunification.

US wants closer relations with China
Powell said that US President George W. Bush and the US government are willing to establish closer relations with China.

Powell said the United States is willing to strengthen cooperation with China.

Powell conveyed greetings to Hu from President Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney, and said that US-China relations have scored important progress in many areas.

The United States understands that the Taiwan issue is a highly sensitive core issue to China and will adhere to the one-China policy, he said.

Powell said the United States will abide by the three joint communiques reached between the United States and China and other relevant commitments the US side has made.

Powell also briefed Hu on the US policy on the Iraq issue and the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and the United States' considered moves on the issues.
