Former Russian PM Goes to Iraq on Confidential Mission

Former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov will arrive in Baghdad Saturday evening on a confidential mission, Moscow's Ekho Moskvy radio reported.

Former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov will arrive in Baghdad Saturday evening on a confidential mission, Moscow's Ekho Moskvy radio reported.

Russia's Itar-tass news agency also reported the trip citing diplomatic sources. But official confirmation for the report has not been obtained so far.

The Interfax news agency quoted Primakov's spokesman Anastasia Korchagina as saying that "I can neither confirm nor deny this report. According to my information, on Sunday afternoon, Primakovis leaving for Canada with a large group of Russian businessmen."

The 71-year-old Primakov, now president of the Russian Trade and Industry Chamber, is an expert in Arab affairs and had been acting as an informal Kremlin adviser and envoy to the Middle East.
