China has donated a batch of meteorological equipment to Afghanistan to help improve its weather forecasting capability, especially in the civil aviation area.
Eighteen boxes of instruments and equipment, including thermometers, psychrometers and hygrographs, were handed over to the Afghan Civil Aviation Ministry at a ceremony Saturday in Kabul.
Documents on the donation project were signed at the ceremony by Afghan Civil Aviation Minister Mir Wais Sadeq and Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan Sun Yuxi. Sun Yuxi said on the occasion that China is interested in expanding its cooperation with Afghanistan in various areas including civil aviation.
China's meteorological equipment will be used to equip six to eight international airports across the country, said A. Q. Qadir, president of Afghan Meteorology Authority, which has a project in cooperation with the Civil Aviation Ministry to secure safety operation of airports in Afghanistan.
"This on-time assistance from China will help Afghan meteorological experts establish their weather forecasting system for civil aviation," said Qadir, adding that his authorities so far could not carry out its function properly due to lack of professional equipment.
Former Taliban rulers destroyed almost all the meteorological instruments in Afghanistan during their six years of rule in the country, claiming that weather forecasting practices were against Islam principles, Qadir said.
Noting that China was the first country to provide meteorological assistance for aviation sector in Afghanistan, Qadir made a plea for international assistance to help meteorological services in other areas like agriculture, traffic and water supply in the country.
