Canadian Prime Minister reiterated Friday that Canada will only go to war if the United Nations approved such action.

"We Canadians are going to war only under the umbrella of the United Nations, so there is no confusion. I express that clearly,"Jean Chretien told students in the eastern province of New Brunswick.

He said he told US President George Bush of his position several months ago, and he wouldn't support military action against Baghdad without the go-ahead from the UN Security Council.

"It was the same position that we had during the first Gulf War,in 1990-1991 when the Government at the time said to George Bush Sr. that if you have a war we will be with you, but only with the support of the United Nations."

Chretien once again said Canada was waiting for the UN SecurityCouncil before making any decision on what role Canadian military forces would play in an attack on Iraq.
