Beijing police caught two tyre thieves Thursday and after their confession arrested their accomplices.
The police detained the two men on bicycles, who seemed flustered when questioned. They later admitted they were going to steal tyres from cars.
From their disclosures, the police arrested Qi Xuhua, who helped sell stolen tyres, and five other members of the gang.
The police seized more than 1,000 tyres in the courtyard of Qi's residence.
On Friday some owners of lost tyres came to reclaim their property when informed by the police. Some were angry to know that their expensive car tyres worth nearly 10,000 yuan (1,200 US dollars) per pair, such as those for Nissan, BMW, Mercedes, Toyotaand Audi vehicles, had been sold for as little as 100 yuan (12 US dollars) each.
