Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said Thursday in Paris that the United States must obtain a decision from the United Nations Security Council before taking actions to disarm Iraq.

"The legitimacy of the United Nations is important and the United States must obtain a decision of the Security Council (before taking actions on Iraq)," said Mubarak at French television France 3.

Mubarak is here among 42 African heads of state and government attending the two-day 22nd Africa-France summit opened Thursday morning.

"I think the United States and France will reach an accord in the end in order that the (UN Security Council) veto is not used,"said Mubarak.

Unlike Washington, Paris favors continued UN weapons inspections to disarm Iraq and opposes any rush to military intervention.

Earlier in the week, French President Jacques Chirac said France could only oppose a second UN resolution, which the United States and Britain are planning to table for vote at the UN Security Council.

But French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin said that France does not envision to use its UN security council veto at present.
