China's largest and fastest container ship, "New Pudong", sailed from Shanghai port Thursday on her maiden voyage to Europe.
The 279.9-meter long and 40.3-meter wide Shanghai-made ship, which belongs to the China Shipping Group, sails at a speed of 26 knots. With a total capacity of 66,000 tons, New Pudong is installed with 610 sockets for iceboxes and can hold up to 5,668 containers.
The ship's 21-day trip will make stops at China's ports of Ningbo, Xiamen, Chiwan and Hong Kong before sailing on to Germany's Hamburg and finally anchoring at Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
The China Shipping Group has ordered eight similar ships, six of which are expected to be completed within this year, for its European route.
Container transportation has been listed as the group's major business. By 2005, its capacity of transportation is expected to reach 270,000 to 280,000 containers.
