Iraqi President Saddam Hussein vowed to fight against a US-led war on his country during a meeting with the Russian Duma delegation Wednesday, the official INA news agency said.
"The Iraqi people respected the freedom, sovereignty and dignityof others, including America, if it respects the freedom, sovereignty and dignity of Iraq and the Arabs," Saddam was quoted by INA as saying.
If the United States was driven by "the devil" to launch a war against Iraq, it would "see the determination of the Iraqi people" and be defeated, the Iraqi leader told the delegation led by Russian Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov.
"The people of Iraq want to avoid war, but not at any price, because we will not give up our independence, dignity and right to live and act freely," Saddam said.
The delegation of Russian legislators, journalists and writers arrived in Baghdad on Monday on a solidarity visit.
Zyuganov brought here proposals to avert a possible US-led war on Iraq.
