Russian President Vladimir Putin and visiting European Commission President Romano Prodi began their meeting in Moscow Tuesday, focusing on the Iraq crisis and relations between Russia and the European Union (EU).

Besides Iraq, Putin said he and Prodi would also exchange views

on the further development of ties between Russia and the EU as well as the preparations for the Russia-EU summit in St. Petersburg in May.

Prodi was expected to brief Putin on the results of Monday's EU emergency summit on Iraq. The EU leaders said in a joint statement following the summit, saying UN arms inspections could not continue indefinitely if Iraq failed to provide full cooperation and war could be an option, but only as a last resort.
