The death toll from a deadly arson attack on a subway train in the southeastern city of Daegu Tuesday morning has risen beyond 130, firefighters said.

After 33 people were confirmed earlier in the day to have been killed in the blaze, rescuers made the grizzly discovery of an estimated 100 more bodies in the burned-out wreckage of the subway carriages at around 5 p.m.,according to media reports.

Police apprehended a 46-year old male suspect two hours after the fire broke out in the No. 1 line of Daegu subway, who was seen to ignited a green plastic milk box with combustible material and threw it into to the train.

According to the police, the fire suddenly broke out when the man, whose first name is Kim, threw a makeshift molotov cocktail into a subway car bound for Ansim Stations from Jincheon.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and tried to rescue the passengers and subway staffs while battling the blaze but their efforts were hampered by toxic fumes.

YTN's television footage showed heavy toxic smoke emitted from the intakes of the subway which caused nearby shopkeepers to close their business for safety.

Police, firefighters with gas masks are still busing with rescue work.

The city's subway has been in suspension and traffic control also conducted in the central city for the transportation of the wounded.
