Russia Stresses Solving Iraqi Issue in Peaceful Way

Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated Monday that his country favors solving the Iraqi issue through diplomatic efforts, the Kremlin said in a press release.
In a phone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Putin reaffirmed the stance of making the most of the possibility offered by UN Security Council Resolution 1441 to settle the Iraqi problem.
The outcome of the UN Security Council meeting on Feb. 14 indicates that there is still a way to solve the issue through political means, the president said.
Earlier in the day, Putin also talked over the telephone with his French counterpart Jacques Chirac.
The two leaders confirmed the continuation of their two countries' position in favor of maximizing the possibility offered by UN Security Council resolution 1441 to ensure a satisfactory settlement to the Iraq problem.
Together with Britain, Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands, Italy is in favor of a possible US-led attack against Iraq while France, Germany, Belgium and Austria maintain that it is premature to disarm Iraq by force because any use of force against Iraq should remain the last resort.
Russia, France and Germany signed a tripartite declaration last week, urging further weapons inspections in Iraq and stressing that the use of force must be the "last option."
