Sino-US Trade Relations Should Go Deeper: Zoellick

US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick says his current trip to China is aimed at bringing Sino-American economic relations to a deeper level. He made the remark at a press conference in Beijing Monday.
Zoellick had arrived in the capital the previous day for a four-day visit to China. When asked how he sees his trip, he said:
"Since you'll have a new leadership team here, we should take this opportunity to look toward a deeper economic relationship. And given the fact you have very active business ties here and some of that business used for exporting is increasingly for the domestic market, one of the other ideas I suggested was we should have more regular discussions about the business network which is being developed, how they see the problems and opportunities. Because I have a lot of input on this from American firms, I'd like to make sure I understand the Chinese side as well."
While in Beijing, Zoellick and his party have held talks with Chinese officials on bilateral and multilateral trade issues, covering subjects such as agricultural products, financial regulations, and intellectual property protection.
"I also want to take the opportunity on this trip to get a better sense of China's implementation in the WTO by going outside Beijing."
Zoellick is scheduled to visit Chongqing City in the southwest, where he will meet local officials and talk with university students to see how the country is being educated on the WTO.
Then he will go to Shenzhen City in the south, and finish his trip in Hong Kong.
Trade between China and the US exceeded 97 billion US dollars last year, up nearly 21 percent year-on-year. The United States is China's second largest trade partner.
