Chirac Criticizes EU Candidates over Pro-American Stance

French President Jacques Chirac sharply criticized the eastern European countries, which are negotiating to join the European Union (EU), for their pro-American stance on Iraq.
Speaking at a press conference after an emergency EU summit on Iraq, Chirac said that these countries' position could endanger their chances of joining EU.
"These countries have been not very well behaved and rather reckless of the danger of aligning themselves too rapidly with the American position," Chirac said.
Chirac particularly warned Romania and Bulgaria, who are still negotiating to enter the bloc in 2007.
"Romania and Bulgaria were particularly irresponsible to (sign the letter) when their position is really delicate," Chirac said.
"If they wanted to diminish their chances of joining Europe they could not have found a better way," he noted.
