Six Palestinians, members of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), were killed on Sunday in a mysterious explosion in a house in downtown Gaza City, witnesses and medical sources reported.
Six Palestinians, members of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), were killed on Sunday in a mysterious explosion in a house in downtown Gaza City, witnesses and medical sources reported.
Medical sources said that Palestinian medical teams and ambulances brought to Shiffa Hospital bodies of six people and three others wounded, adding that the three are in moderate condition.
Palestinian witnesses in the neighborhood of Asqoola in Gaza City said that they heard in succession two huge explosions from the small farm building which belongs to a Hamas member.
The witnesses said that the rubble and the bodies flew up in theair after the big blasts occurred, adding that they believe it was an Israeli army huge missile fired from the air that had targeted the house and caused the death of the six.
Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Ranteesi said that among the dead from the blast was senior Hamas activist Nidal Farkhat, whose brother Muhammed carried out an armed attack at the Atzmona settlement about one year ago, in which five students were killed.
"Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz are to be blamed. Our response to killing our people would be immediate and tough," said Ranteesi.
However, Palestinian security sources doubt that Israel had targeted the house, adding that the explosion could have been a result of a working accident while some Hamas militants were preparing some bombs in the house.
Ranteesi said that the explosion could be an Israeli retaliationto killing four Israeli soldiers that were killed on Saturday aftertheir tank they were driving in northern Gaza Strip rolled over a roadside bomb.
The Palestinian police said that they are investigating the circumstances of the explosion, adding that rescue teams are still in the area looking for more survivals.
Palestinian residents confirmed that they had seen Israeli F-16 warplane fighters flying over Gaza City all day before the explosion, adding that the explosion was caused by an Israeli missile.
