A gas leakage outside two residential buildings in this capital city of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province killed one people and poisoned 29 others on Saturday morning.

All victims have been sent to hospitals for emergency treatment.

At 7:38, the city gas company received a call of alarm and in five minutes a rescue team arrived at the accident site. With the help from police and fire-fighters, the team immediately evacuated residents from the two buildings in the residential quarters of Dongbei light-alloy processing factory.

Investigation shows the deformation of the soil layer caused the leak of an underground gas pipe outside the buildings and the leaked gas went up the buildings through the channel for heating pipes.

City Mayor Shi Zhongxin and officials from the district and the gas company joined the rescue efforts and later visited victims at hospitals. The mayor called for all efforts to treat the victims.
