Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maheron Friday called for convening an emergency Arab summit to discuss the Iraqi standoff, the official MENA news agency reported.
Maher made the appeal to Arab League chief Amr Moussa, who chairs the 22-member pan-Arab forum.
"Maher asked Moussa to call for holding an emergency Arab summitat the Cairo-based Arab League as soon as possible to discuss the Iraq crisis," MENA said.
On Feb. 4, Moussa implied that the Egyptian capital could host an Arab summit in early March, weeks earlier ahead of a regular summit due in Bahrain.
Moussa said there is a tendency that an Arab summit, originally scheduled for late March, could be held in Cairo in early March, and Arab states were making a final arrangement for the summit.
Diplomats in Bahrain confirmed earlier this month that the summit will be held in Cairo on Mar. 1 or 2 under Bahrain's chairmanship.
The Arab summit will be preceded by a meeting of Arab foreign ministers scheduled for Feb. 15-16 in the Egyptian capital.
During the gathering, the foreign minister were said to focus onthe Iraqi crisis and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
A war on Iraq looms large as the United States has stepped up military buildup in the Gulf and vowed to disarm Iraq by force if necessary.
Arab countries call for a peaceful solution to the Iraqi standoff, while urging Iraq to fully cooperate with UN arms inspectors.
