Arafat Announces Readiness for Appointment of PM

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat announced readiness Friday in the West Bank city of Ramallah for the appointment of a prime minister to head a future cabinet as a key reform measure, reports reaching here said.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat announced readiness Friday in the West Bank city of Ramallah for the appointment of a prime minister to head a future cabinet as a key reform measure, reports reaching here said.

Arafat told reporters that he has "decided to appoint a Palestinian prime minister" and "will ask the Palestinian Legislative Council to take the necessary measures to that effect."

The announcement was made after an eye-catching meeting with officials of the international quartet comprising the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia.
