An 85-year-old Taiwanese fisherman was rescued by Chinese mainland police and fishermen Tuesday off the coast of Lianjiang County of east China's Fujian Province.

Due to foggy conditions, the elderly Zhang, a resident of Mazu islands of Taiwan Province, became disoriented about half an hour into his routine trip to Huangqi Port of Fujian Province at 9 a.m.on Feb. 10.

At 7 a.m. on Feb. 11, the Huangqi Frontier Defense Station received a plea from Zhang's family to search for the old man and the station at once sent out 15 policemen as well as informed fishing vessels in the area to look for the endangered man.

With the help of the local fisherman, Zhang was finally found in the afternoon of Feb. 11 and reached Huangqi Port at 5:30 p.m. Now both Zhang and his boat are in good condition.

According to Zhang, he was on his way to spend the traditional lantern festival, which falls on Feb. 15 this year, with his relatives at his hometown in Changle City of Fujian Province.

Zhang said he got in touch with his relatives in Changle City ten years ago and since then he often went by boat to visit them.
