India Test-fires 'Brahmos' Cruise Missile

India Wednesday test-fired Supersonic anti-ship cruise missile "Brahmos" from a warship stationed in the Bay of Bengal off Orissa coast, east India, and hit the target accurately.
Jointly developed by India and Russia, the cruise missile, witha range of about 300 km, was fired from India Navy's destroyer "Rajput" Wednesday afternoon, according to the Press Trust of India(PTI).
"The missile was successfully test fired from a naval ship off Balasore. The missile followed the predicted trajectory and accurately hit the target," Indian Defense Minister George Fernandes said in New Delhi after the launch of the missile.
"Brahmos" can carry 200-300 kg payload of conventional warhead mass depending on the version, the PTI quoted the sources as saying.
Primarily from a ship, it can fly up to a height of 14 km at 2 Mach speed (twice the speed of sound). It has a preset trajectory but a sensor on the head detects the target and can change its course to strike anywhere within 20 km of the original target.
The missile is marginally over eight meters in length, 670 mm in diameter and weighs 3,000 kg. It combines the propulsion systemand self-homing device of Russian's "Yakhont" or "Onyx" system with on-board computer equipment developed by Indian defense scientists.
The missile was first test-fired on June 12, 2001 and again on April 23, 2002.
