Russian, US FMs Discuss Iraq by Telephone

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov spoke by telephone with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Tuesday, calling for continuing and strengthening inspections in Iraq.

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov spoke by telephone with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Tuesday, calling for continuing and strengthening inspections in Iraq.

Ivanov confirmed the Russia's devotion to a peaceful solution to the Iraqi problem in cooperation with the United States and other countries, on the basis of strict fulfillment of the resolutions of the UN Security Council, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said in a statement.

Ivanov also called for "further efficient international inspection in Iraq", which he stressed as the essence of the Feb. 10 joint statement by Russia, France and Germany, said Yakovenko.

According to Yakovenko, Ivanov would attend Friday's Security Council meeting, at which the weapons inspectors will report on their progress.
